ICC imposes severe penalties on players for breaching regulations in a thrilling clash
Dubai, June 12, 2023 – In a stunning turn of events, Indian and Australian players participating in the highly anticipated World Test Championship final have been hit with substantial fines for their actions during the match. The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced that the Indian team has been fined their entire match fees for maintaining a slow over rate, while opener Shubman Gill faces an additional 15 percent deduction for criticizing the umpire’s decision in a debatable call.
According to the official statement released by the ICC, the Indian team was found to be five overs short of the target after considering the time allowances. As per Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, a 20 percent fine is imposed for each over not bowled within the allotted time. On the other hand, the Australian team was also penalized, losing 80 percent of their match fees for their slow over rate.
The financial consequences of these fines are significant. Indian players who are part of the playing XI earn Rs 15 lakh per Test, while the reserve players receive Rs 7.5 lakhs each. With the entire match fee being withheld, the impact on the players’ finances is substantial.
Shubman Gill, who displayed outstanding skills throughout the match, found himself at the center of controversy. He was found guilty of breaching Article 2.7 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which pertains to public criticism or inappropriate comments related to incidents occurring in international matches. Gill had taken to social media to express his disagreement with the umpire’s decision after a catch he was involved in was ruled in favor of the Australians. The television replay shared by Gill seemed to indicate that the ball may have touched the ground during the catch.
This clash between India and Australia in the World Test Championship final was filled with excitement and nail-biting moments. Australia emerged victorious with a 209-run win, leaving India devastated. The match witnessed a lackluster performance by the Indian team in their pursuit of the mammoth 444-run target, losing seven wickets before lunch on the final day.
The ICC’s decision to impose these fines underscores the importance of adhering to the regulations and maintaining the integrity of the game. While the penalties will have a financial impact on the players, it serves as a reminder that all participants are expected to conduct themselves in a manner befitting the spirit of the sport.
